ABOUT THE FILM
An Invitation to Tea explores the question: "Do the stories we are told as children contradict the "real world" we live in as adults? Or does the world we live in as adults simply forget the lessons/stories we are told as children?"
Laura is a millennial who grew up believing a lot of what was told to her generation: That life was what she made of it. That all that mattered is that she tried. That around every dark corner, is the next ray of light. Much of this outlook came from being raised by her grandfather (a one-time successful children's book author) and the series of stories he wrote for her entitled,
The Adventures of Willigad and Prime.
Now a woman in her early 30s, she has yet to find success in a stable career, her marriage is over, and her financial situation is the worst it has ever been. So when her grandfather passes away of cancer, Laura finds herself back at the house she grew up in dealing with its foreclosure.
Angry and feeling disheartened by her current circumstances, Laura is sorting through items in the basement where she used to play as a child when she is greeted by Willigad, the title character of her grandfather's stories. He invites her to sit down for tea as a symbolic gesture to invite her to reconnect with him. By doing so, he hopes she will reconnect with the lessons and beliefs she held as a child to see they are not just stories intended for children.
